About Us

The Franciscan Mission Association (FMA) funds special projects of the Franciscan Friars Conventual as they continue the legacy of St. Francis of Assisi – caring for our poorest brothers and sisters. In 1924, the FMA was established to support foreign and domestic missions of the friars of the United States. Thanks to the generosity of so many, the FMA is now able to support friars in their work in more than 65 countries.

Today, the FMA funds vital projects in developing regions around the globe. This work includes:

  • Constructing hospitals, medical centers, clinics, and maternity wards
  • Establishing daycare centers and schools
  • Digging water wells
  • Founding religious education and faith formation programs
  • Building churches, chapels and shrines and establishing seminaries and formation houses

FMA Funds Projects at Home and Abroad

Throughout our 100-year history, the heart of the FMA has been a host of dedicated lay supporters of the friars as they directly care for the marginalized. We’re eternally grateful for the prayers and alms of so many who support our work.

St. Francis felt a call to be a missionary. A call that many of our friars feel today. The FMA supports the friars inspired by his example and have responded a call to spread the Good News. Over the centuries this has taken many forms, but Franciscans always protect and celebrate the dignity of each person, that he or she may have “life and life abundantly” (John 10:10).

FMA headquarters are at the Provincialate for the Our Lady of the Angels Province in Ellicott City, Md.
